- archbishop of Canterbury, to the duke, with a message appointing
- the duke as heir to the kingdom which God had entrusted to him.
- He also, at a later time, sent Harold, the greatest of all the
- counts in the kingdom alike in riches and honour and power.
- This he did in order that Harold might guarantee the crown to
- the duke by his fealty and confirm the same with an oath
- according to Christian usage.
